A patient of ICRC's orthopaedic centre in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i Sharif practices on his two new prostheses in the gait training ward. The centre has operated since 1991, in which time more than 23,000 people have been treated, many of whom go on to work in the centre. In fact 85% of the staff is made up of former patients.
