Almost at every major traffic signal in Karachi are these five or six children armed with wipers who come rushing to clean your windshield the minute the light goes red. Often they will not heed to your calls to stop and at times drivers of the cars get abusive as they shoo the children away. A common tactic for the children is to quickly do the job and guilt the people in the car into paying for the cleaning. Some people churn out 10 Ruppees ($0.095) while others simply drive off saying paying the children will only encourage their behavior of forcing themselves onto cars which is both dangerous and wrong. Life isn't easy at all for these street children who belong to extremely poor families and cannot afford to go for any kind of schooling. In many cases these children have been kidnapped from all over Sindh and are forced into begging by the mafia. In 2012 alone, over 2000 children were reported missing and only 16 percent recovered by the authorities. In 2005 the United Nations estimated that there were over 1.5million street children in Pakistan alone- a number that has no doubt increased in the last decade.
