I am writing to express my grave concern over the recent misconduct of South Korean journalists towards BTS member Suga (Min Yoongi). These individuals abused their positions in the media by spreading misinformation and fake news and in creating a photo line against legal requirements outside of Seoul Police Station on August 22nd. Such behavior not only violates journalistic ethics but also infringes upon Suga's human rights and privacy.
This incident raises serious questions about South Korean press integrity and it is crucial that media professionals adhere to ethical standards and respect the boundaries between public interest and personal privacy.
On multiple occasions, journalists have knowingly spread unconfirmed information regarding Suga’s case that has resulted in mass hate online and severely affected public opinion and his reputation. The reporting of unconfirmed information goes against the ethics of fair journalism.
Below, I have attached photo evidence of reporters violating the law and creating an impromptu “photoline” despite it being an infringement on Suga’s rights and a human rights violation.
The practice of public photo lines for suspects can unfairly influence public opinion and permanently damage reputations. The recent tragic death of Oscar-winning actor Lee Sun-kyun (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-67831513), following multiple photo lines and lengthy interrogations, raises concerns about human rights violations by South Korea's press.
Given your organization's Global Charter of Ethics for Journalism, I urge the International Federation of Journalists to investigate this matter.
