Supporters in Istanbul celebrate the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) election victory in Turkey, June 7, 2015. HDP won more than the required 10 percent of the national vote to earn seats in Parliament for the first time. The party came to represent not only Kurds, but also other minorities and those unhappy with the current administration, and some see the results as a continuation of what began with the protests in Gezi Park two years ago. The election also resulted in President Erdogan's Freedom and Justice Party (AKP) losing their majority in Parliament, and an end to AKP's single-party government. Also notable were the extremely high voter turnout--86 percent--and the thousands of election observers who volunteered to prevent incidents of fraud.
