There are 236 species in the tanager family, all found in the Western Hemisphere, but only two find their way regularly to Missouri. Both are very red — the summer tanager and the scarlet tanager.

These two tanagers will be arriving for the summer nesting season by late April, bringing with them some of the year’s most spectacular plumage.

The two make summer birding fun in our area. They require a second look, these two red folks. They are essentially the same size — 7-7½ inches long with a wingspan of 11-12 inches. They arrive at the same time of the year; eat the same varied diet of bees, wasps, insects and fruit; nest high in trees far out on branches; lay pale blue or green eggs with brown spots; have the same genus name; head south at the same time in the fall; and both might pay a visit to your garden and yard, where they will eat your peanut butter, suet and corn meal.
