A shepherd keeps one of two sheep-dogs restrained (more gently than it looks) while two boys load up a donkey before setting off. They and two other shepherds had stopped to boil tea for themselves while letting their flock of sheep graze deep in a valley of Warsaj district in northern Afghanistan's Takhar Province. This twenty minute stop by the road, after 24 hours spent 50km up a narrow valley of verdant green and impenetrable, soaring mountains, was one of those vignettes from life that I live for. The three shepherds welcomed me to their fire, offered tea and bread, and, despite the impossible language barrier, gave off a warmth that you wish the rest of the world could share in. And then, returning to internet-land to discover the news of Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan; to be executed by an Indonesian firing squad in 72 hours.
