Sahar, mother of two children, uses a computer-generated

Sahar, mother of two children, uses a computer-generated pattern while weaving a wool carpet in a government-supported apprenticeship program in Avanos, a town in the Cappadocia region of Turkey, Oct. 30, 2015. Students learn how to hand-weave wool-on-wool, wool-on-cotton, and the most challenging and intricate silk-on-silk carpets, gradually improving the quality of their work over the course of 2-3 years until they graduate. The school is set in a factory where carpets are woven, packaged, and shipped for sale throughout Turkey and abroad. Because carpet-weaving is traditionally woman's work, all of the students are female. One of the instructors said that one result of the program was a higher status for these women within their families, because they can earn money with their new skills. Sahar will graduate to silk carpets in a couple of months.
