The social dynamics in the Wakhan Corridor are quite different to much of the rest of Afghanistan’s. Whereas in many parts of the country it’s rare to see even a woman’s face, in Wakhan - in the far north east of the country - the iconic blue burqa is nowhere to be seen and women, as often as men, can be seen tending flocks of livestock. In this atmosphere, the willingness of women to interact with men other than their husbands or immediate family also provides a vignette for what an Afghanistan with greater gender equality and tolerance might look like. Pictured, a group of women watch over their flock of sheep as they graze in small paddocks higher up in the valley in the village of Warzuds.
