The 6PM Tolo News hour is filmed in a studio in one of Kabul's more heavily fortified districts, home also to the small bureaus of the handful of international media organisations that remain in the the Afghan capital, as well as several Embassies. Tolo, the country's biggest TV network was established in 2003 and funded mostly by the U.S. Agency for International Development. As a result of this and dissatisfaction with the practices of Tolo's parent organisation, The Moby Group, the company often draws the ire of the Taliban, whose threats are relentless. On one occasion recently, Moby Group assessed a threat as serious enough to evacuate all but essential staff from their Kabul offices. The climate under which journalists work in Afghanistan is considered one of the worst in the world. More to come in an upcoming story for The Washington Post.
