Partnering For A Vaccine
How safely delivering a COVID-19 vaccine candidate at speed and scale requires public-private collaboration
The clock is ticking. As COVID-19 continues to spread around the world, surging again in the U.S. and other countries, people everywhere are banking on the hope that a vaccine or treatment will soon be developed, manufactured and available for public use to bring our lives back to normal.
Globally, more than 100 companies and organizations are working tirelessly to “find the cure” — to develop a vaccine or treatment that would prevent or reduce virus-related deaths and help restore normalcy by allowing economies to reopen. In the U.S., Operation Warp Speed is the name of a federal government initiative to fast-track an effective vaccine candidate through partnerships with drug developers, drug manufacturers and contract development manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) that enable pharmaceutical companies to scale by outsourcing production. Spearheaded by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), an office of the U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), it’s one of the largest vaccine efforts in history, with a goal of delivering 300 million doses of a safe, effective vaccine by early 2021. According to the HHS, as of September 2020, Congress had already directed more than $10 billion dollars towards this effort, fueling public and private partnerships that are working on overdrive.
