A Syrian teen competes in a model airplane contest held in a park in Fatih district, Istanbul, Turkey, Dec. 27, 2015. Many of the teens wrote the names of their own home cities, including Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Golan and Dara'a, on their planes. These youth took a model airplane course at Ilaf School in Istanbul, where around 400 primary and secondary-age Syrian children are students. The children are taught a range of subjects in both Arabic and Turkish, have opportunities for fun and learning during school-sponsored activities, and receive psychological support if they need it. Turkey hosts more than 2 million Syrian refugees, at least 600,000 of them school-aged children. However, according to a 2015 UNHCR report, an estimated 400,000 of these children are not in school.
