km east of Ishkashim into Afghanistans remote north

150km east of Ishkashim, into Afghanistan's remote north-eastern Wakhan Corridor, along a rough dirt road that shadows the Panj River (and the border with Tajikistan), the valley forks. To the right, somewhere behind lesser peaks closer to the valley lies Afghanistan's highest peak - Norshaq (7,492m). Further along, through undulations of rocks like ocean swells turned to stone, shepherds lead their flocks hours from home for sporadic tufts of grass that protrude like upturned straw brooms, against all odds, from beneath.
