The summer storm that a friend's Afghan colleagues were anticipating today with delight, rolls in over Kabul from the north, after an uncharacteristically humid day in the capital. Rain is welcomed by the people of Kabul in summer, when the dry air and windy days kick up dust from the surrounding hills. That, on top of the smog produced by the cars of the capital's 6 million-odd residents and the smoke of their wood-burning cookers and heaters, and the air can, at times, be suffocating. The Ministry of Public Health has estimated that as many as 3,000 Kabul residents may die annually as a result of air pollution.
