As someone who grew up in a society that, relative to Afghanistan, oozed hedonism and rewarded the macho amongst it's men, masculinity in Afghanistan is defined by all sorts of surprising traits. The commander of a small but well-renowned Afghan Local Police (ALP) unit in central Helmand Province kept pigeons, like this one in the window of the pit-latrine at his home, while late last night one of his men handed me a strongly perfumed rose not long after firing back at Taliban positions, after a modest attack on his ALP outpost.
