During Ramadan, after the evening prayer is over and the streets have gone quiet as families break the day's fast at home, Kabul comes alive again. Traffic jams clog the centre of the city where kebabs cook on hot coals outside restaurants and carrots are juiced by the hundred. In Kart-e-Parwan, pictured, one street is populated with nothing but ice cream stands where cardamom flavoured soft-serve is towered on to cones for families out in the balmy evenings, making the most of the nighttime hours in which, according to Islam, they are allowed to eat during the holy month of Ramadan.
