After travelling a little over an hour south of Balkh Province's capital Mazar-I Sharif to Sholgar district, the ICRC President Peter Maurer was treated to an unexpected spectacle this afternoon - a Buzkashi match. Because if its unique, and arguably unrivalled status of neutrality, The ICRC benefits from far greater latitude when it comes to security protocols and access limitations. Even with the President aboard, the delegation was able to pull over—if only for ten minutes—to take in a unique Afghan experience; a decision which, for the vast majority of other international organisations here, would have given security advisors a heart attack. The scene—surreal to the uninitiated—was all the more so when a taxi drove across the boundaryless field, without anyone in the crowd so much as blinking an eyelid.
