A group of boys make their way home after fishing for small, freshwater fish with a homemade net in the Khanabad River in Taluqan, the capital of Takhar Province in Afghanistan's north east. From Taluqan the river runs west until it meets up with the Amudarya River which marks the country's northern border with Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and eventually Turkmenistan. The bridge under which the group waded and floated for home is now home to a small group of opium addicts and its pillars pitted with bullet holes, which, I was told, came during a clash between Ahmad Shah Massoud's Mujaheddin and Taliban fighters in the year 2000.
