The immaculately preserved Citadel of Herat, or Citadel of Alexander, dates back more than 2000 years to when Alexander the Great entered what is now Afghanistan from the north. It has hosted numerous empires in the two centuries since and been rebuilt and repaired many times over as well. Most recently it was restored by UNESCO in the mid-1970s. Today the Citadel was host to The Herat Security Dialogue—a conference attended by Afghan politicians, academics and international organisations.
