For those of you who haven’t heard, it was the Islamic revolution of Iran that sparked my interest in studying Islam which two years later led me to becoming a Muslim. As a journalism student, I had been interested in different revolutions, like that of Iran. It was in order to understand the roots of this revolution that I started studying the holy Quran.
After becoming a Muslim, I used to watch footage of Ayatullah Khomeini when he was visiting with people in Jamaran.
To my surprise, I would see everyone in the audience cry as they listened to this old man talk and I could never understand why. Though by this time I had come to love and respect him greatly, I could not understand why people were crying the way they did. Years later when I was able to come to Iran for the first time, I had the honor of meeting Imam Khomeini in a public gathering in Jamaran. It was when he entered the room that I too, like so many others before me, could not hold back my tears.
I had already learned about this Man of the Year. I had already listened to him speak many times.
But that day, it was Imam Khomeini’s presence that took over my entire being. Something about who he was, as a person. His presence spoke an international language…
