A photo of the only female participant in Afghanistan's first international #marathon, which took place in Bamiyan province, Zainab completed all 42 kilometres by sheer willpower. Female sports is still widely frowned upon in Afghanistan, and training in public is not just considered culturally inappropriate but can be outright dangerous. So for the past four months, Zainab's fitness regime has consisted of laps in her family's small backyard. And as if the odds weren't stacked against her already, she only arrived here in Bamiyan, with very little time to acclimatise to a race in 3,200 meters altitude.
