The Afghan side of the border with Iran, at the Islam Qal

The Afghan side of the border with Iran, at the Islam Qala border crossing in Herat Province. For non-commercial traffic the crossing opens a couple of hours either side of midday each day. During those hours, UNHCR representatives at the border estimate between 700-800 Afghans are being deported from Iran, daily. Many have been there for years or even decades and had established lives and families, while others have travelled there without visas, more recently, in search of work, or futures in Europe.
