Donna Troy

Donna Troy

Donna Troy has the most confusing backstory in all of comics, and even she doesn't fully understand it. The short version: she was rescued as a young girl from a burning apartment building by Wonder Woman (Diana Prince) and brought to Paradise Island, home of the Amazons. There, she was raised as Diana's younger sister, trained as a warrior, and given powers similar to Wonder Woman's — super strength, flight, enhanced speed, and unbreakable bracelets. She became Wonder Girl, fighting alongside Diana and the Teen Titans as a hero in her own right.

The long, messy version (which has been retconned multiple times) goes deeper: Donna was originally created as a magical duplicate of Diana, born from a mirror and given false memories. Later stories revealed she was a orphan kidnapped by a villain named Dark Angel, who cursed Donna to live countless tragic lives across parallel universes — each one ending in misery. The only way to break the curse was for Donna to become a hero in her "true" life, which she did. Another version says she was literally formed from clay like Diana, then given life by the gods, making her a true Amazon sister by magic, not blood. Comics have never settled on one answer, so Donna's defining trait is ironically that she has no single origin — she just is, and she's had to make peace with not knowing who she really is.

Personality-wise, Donna is the rock of the superhero community. She's mature, compassionate, and emotionally steady in ways that Diana sometimes isn't. While other heroes have dramatic breakdowns or moral crises, Donna just quietly handles business. She's a natural leader — she led the Teen Titans better than almost anyone — and she's fiercely protective of young heroes, seeing herself as the big sister to everyone who's lost or broken. She's also struggled with profound loss: she married a man named Terry Long, had a son, then watched both die tragically. She's died and been resurrected multiple times herself. But unlike many heroes who become grim after trauma, Donna stays warm. She's the one you call when your life is falling apart, because she'll listen without judgment, hug you, then help you figure it out. Her power is super strength. Her superpower is emotional stability.
