Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah (August 31, 1960 – September 27, 2024) - (1339 AH-1403 AH) was a prominent Lebanese Shiite cleric and politician who served as the third Secretary General of the Lebanese political party and militia group Hezbollah since 1992.
He was born into a Lebanese Shiite family and completed his education in Tyre. He joined the Amal movement for a while and then went to a seminary in Baalbek. He later studied and taught at the Amal school. Nasrallah joined the newly formed Hezbollah after the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. After a brief period of religious studies in Iran and the assassination of Sayyid Abbas Mousavi in 1992, he returned to Lebanon and became the leader of Hezbollah.
Education
Hassan Nasrallah completed his primary education in his hometown and middle school in a neighborhood called San al-Fil in eastern Beirut. He completed high school in the village of Bazouria in southern Lebanon and in 1976, at the age of 16, went to the city of Najaf in Iraq to study theology. After living and studying in the city for 2 years, he returned to Lebanon and studied theology at the Imam Montazeri School in Baalbek.
Nasrallah went to Qom in 1989 to complete his seminary studies, but after a year, due to the intensity of tensions in Lebanon, he returned to Beirut at the request of the Hezbollah council.
After completing high school and at the beginning of the Lebanese Civil War, Nasrallah joined the Amal movement and began working as an organizational leader of the Shiite Amal movement in the village of Al-Bazouriyya. While studying at the Imam Montazeri seminary, he was also involved in organizational activities in the Amal movement, and at the same time, he was elected as a member of its political bureau.
Responsibilities
Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah began working in Hezbollah from the beginning of its formation. In 1985, he moved to Beirut and assumed heavier responsibilities.
Nasrallah's first serious responsibility was preparing resistance forces and establishing military cells, and at the same time, he was the deputy of Ibrahim Amin, one of Hezbollah's representatives in the Lebanese parliament.
In 1987, at the same time as the formation of Hezbollah's Executive Committee, Nasrallah was elected to head the committee. At the same time, he also joined Hezbollah's Decision-Making Council and was its executive leader.
Secretary General
After the assassination of Sayyed Abbas Mousavi by Israeli helicopters on February 16, 1992, by consensus of Hezbollah's decision-making council, Nasrallah was elected Secretary General of Hezbollah. He was 32 years old at the time of Hezbollah's leadership.
During Nasrallah's leadership, some Hezbollah members participated in the Lebanese elections. Nasrallah decided that Hezbollah's political wing would become an important player in Lebanon, parallel to its military wing. Hezbollah won eight seats in the Lebanese parliament.
Combative activities against Israel
Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah adopted an aggressive stance against Israel from the very beginning of his leadership of Lebanese Hezbollah. A year after he became Secretary General of Hezbollah in 1993, 26 Israeli soldiers were killed by Hezbollah in the conflict between the parties.
Hezbollah's war against Israel continued to push Israel back from southern Lebanon. The number of Israeli soldiers killed reached 40 in 1997. As conditions became difficult, Israel was forced to leave Lebanese soil in 2000.
Hezbollah's victory in expelling Israel from southern Lebanon and the killing of Nasrallah's son in the 1997 war made Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah popular in Lebanon.
