Touring Kunduz City in northern Afghanistan with an Afghan National Police commander recently. The city, which fell to the Taliban in September last year, has been under the tenuous control of the Afghan government since it was retaken in mid-October. While an influx of U.S. Special Operations Forces have been deployed to Kunduz and Afghan commandos have initiated sporadic operations in the surrounding districts, the insurgent group still has a firm grip on much of the province. With an upsurge in fighting expected to come with the traditional Spring and Summer fighting season, locals and analysts expect Kunduz City to be seriously threatened once again this year. Listening to high ranking soldiers and police talk about the future in Kunduz, however, one would think that everything was as peachy as the colour of the paint drying on the walls of several police offices still being repaired and painted after being torched by Taliban fighters later last year.
